The Mark Nightingale Quintet

Multi-award winning jazz trombonist Mark Nightingale has assembled a quintet of the highest pedigree to play music that both stimulates the brain and warms the soul. This band never fails to delight audiences with its own intricate blend of jazz-funk originals, all composed by the musicians themselves.

A fine-crafted set of in-the-pocket jazz funk originals
Mike Hobart, Financial Times

Nightingale’s dextrous yet earthy tones are complimented in the front line by the virtuosity and raw excitement of Nigel Hitchcock’s world-renowned alto saxophone. Rock-solid grooves and yet more inventive solos are provided by the powerhouse rhythm section of Graham Harvey on Fender Rhodes, Laurence Cottle on electric bass and Ian Thomas on drums. These guys are all at the top of their individual trees, and together form a formidable musical force.

The quintet’s debut CD, “Out Of The Box”, was released in 2010 on the Woodville Records label, and is available at woodvillerecords.com

The Mark Nightingale Big Band

Comprised of the absolute cream of the UK’s jazz and studio musicians, the Mark Nightingale Big Band is an incredibly tight, exciting combination that will have you on the edge of your seat! The band is fronted by Mark and plays his own compositions as well as arrangements of standards.

It was THE gig of the festival, – I could have sold 3 times as many tickets, we were turning people away for weeks
Ian Darrington, Director Wigan International Jazz Festival

The Sound of J&K

This line-up is reminiscent of the fabulous swinging ‘Jay and Kai’ groups of the 1950’s and 60’s.

It was such a treat to hear two of the UK’s best trombonists, play in the style of the classic J&K band. The harmonies and counter melodies were brilliant and the solos very exciting – there’s an obvious synergy in the band too. Well worth booking!
Ian Pennicott, Director Teignmouth Jazz Festival

It features Mark Nightingale and Alistair White, two of the major forces in British jazz trombone playing today, supported and complimented by an all-star rhythm section. Repertoire includes some J&K classics as well as other standards and originals given the uniquely refreshing and appealing two-trombone treatment. It’s a jazz trombone tour-de-force that will have your toes tapping and your face smiling!

The Andy Panayi Quartet

This long-standing group featuring Andy Panayi (saxes, flute), Mark Nightingale (trombone), Simon Woolf (bass) and Steve Brown (drums)
continues to delight audiences and push the boundaries of the pianoless quartet.

It would be impossible to find four more polished players on today’s London jazz scene and, crucially, four who play together with such relaxed empathy
Dave Gelly, The Observer.

Being blessed with three strong composers they naturally have a wealth of original material, but the band can also draw upon the majority of the original Gerry Mulligan Quartet repertoire and great tunes by other jazz composers of the era.
The quartet has many CDs out on various labels. The 2 most recent (‘News from Blueport’ and ‘The Solar Cats’) are available at woodvillerecords.com

Bespoke Groups

The above are all working combinations, but if there’s something special you’d like it’s not a problem! In the past Mark has been asked to form various one-off groups with a variety of players, resulting in some memorable musical occasions. So why not team up Mark with some of your own favourite musicians? Material can be arranged for most sizes of group, and all suggestions welcome.

Guest Soloist

People often want to feature the Mark Nightingale trombone sound with their own big band or group. Mark has a library of big band features available to mail out so they can be used at rehearsals prior to a concert as guest soloist. He is also happy to fit in with the band’s own repertoire if desired, take a rehearsal, or work closely with individual sections. This flexibility and willingness to ‘get stuck-in’ has proved particularly popular with student bands.

Writing Commissions

If you would like your own Mark Nightingale composition or arrangement please contact Mark using the contact form on the “Contact Me” page.

Mark’s composition and arranging skills have blossomed and flourished since the early days of writing big band charts whilst in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Nowadays he is regularly called upon by his fellow professionals on all instruments and in many different genres to write tailor-made features for them. As well as individuals he has also received specialist commissions from groups such as LSO Brass, The New Trombone Collective, London Brass and a wide variety of big bands Europe-wide. Mark’s compositions have been featured at International Trombone Festivals across the world, and also a great deal with the BBC Big Band, with whom he has occasionally been a guest conductor over the years. Cleo Laine was so taken with his composition ‘Just Once More’ that she put lyrics to it and recorded it live at Carnegie Hall.

Mark has had a long association with Warwick Music Ltd since their inception in the 1990’s. He now has a catalogue of study material and concert pieces for players of all standards on various instruments. His study book ‘Easy Jazzy Tudes’ has been the company’s best seller for many years and continues to attract glowing reports from tutors up and down the country. Many of Mark’s pieces and studies have been taken up by the music examination boards (ABRSM, Trinity and Guildhall) for use in their syllabi, bringing them to a wide audience of instrumentalists of all ages.

In other fields Mark has written commercially for various CDs and written music for all sorts of groups from saxophone quartet to chamber orchestra.
